The 5 things that make kettles different
Now that you've seen the types, here's the vocabulary behind them — the five choices that separate one kettle from another.
Size (capacity)
From a personal 0.8L (about 2–4 cups) up to a family-sized 2.0L. Bigger holds more; smaller heats a single cup faster.
Temperature control
Basic kettles boil to 212°F and stop. Temperature-control kettles let you dial in a lower heat — key for green tea and pour-over.
Material
Glass lets you watch the water; stainless steel is durable and opaque; double-wall glass stays cool to the touch.
Tea infuser
A removable basket that steeps loose-leaf tea right inside the kettle — no separate teapot needed.
Spout
A drip-free spout pours cleanly for everyday use. A gooseneck gives the slow, precise stream pour-over and matcha depend on.
What size do I need?
| Capacity | Roughly serves | Great for |
|---|---|---|
| 0.8L | 2–4 cups | Solo drinkers, small kitchens, pour-over coffee, travel |
| 1L – 1.2L | 3–5 cups | One or two people, everyday tea & coffee |
| 1.5L – 1.7L | 6–7 cups | Small households, entertaining a few guests |
| 1.8L – 2.0L | A full pot | Families, big batches, hosting |

Care & safety tips
- Descale monthly if you have hard water: boil a 50/50 water-and-white-vinegar mix, let sit 15–20 min, then rinse well.
- Hand-wash the kettle body and infuser — never submerge the electrical base.
- Fill between the min and max lines — never above max, and never run it empty.
- Let it cool before refilling a just-boiled kettle.
